Q&A

If there was one piece of art you could feature in, which would it be and why?

I do not see myself being featured in and would not like to be part of an artwork.

Who inspires you and why? An artist, a family member, someone current or historical?

Too many artists and writers and musicians to name them.  So many people bring inspiration to me all the time.

What are your cultural aspirations? What do you still want to see, do and achieve?

Education - I seek to find some entry point into design education for the young.  I believe innovation and design can be taught in different ways to what I have seen today. I hope to contribute to that somehow, some day.

What are your favourite cultural cities in the world and why?

Beijing, for those of us who have Chinese blood but often question what is the real china...it is the ultimate China; Kyoto, for the refinement of craft; Chandigarh, for the modernist ideal in physical form; and New York, for the raw and powerful energy.

What are you up to at the moment and where can we find it?

My founding partner Lyndon Neri and I have got a wide variety of projects coming up, ranging from the Hutong renovation, which we’ll be working on with a few other architects such as MAD architect, MVRDV and Kengo Kuma, to the development of a central multipurpose HUB Performance and Exhibition Centre near Hongqiao Railway Station in Shanghai. We also won a competition in London to renovate the Bow Street Magistrates Court, and later this year we will complete our work on a mix-use lifestyle village and residential villa complex in Suzhou. Other projects include new restaurants for Michelin chef Jason Atherton, a retail expansion for Selfridges in London, and a new Sulwhasoo flagship store for Amore Pacific in Seoul.
