Neil Barrett

Neil Barrett's enthusiasm for fashion design began at an early age. Born in Devon, England, Neil Barrett studied at both Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art in London. After graduating, Neil was appointed Senior Men’s Designer at Gucci. Five years later, he approached Prada, proposing the start of a men’s line: Prada Menswear was launched eight months later. Neil's work under the label was enormously influential, establishing a blueprint for minimal menswear. In 1999, Neil Barrett independently founded his eponymous label, with immediate praise from buyers and press. Ever since, Neil Barrett delivered innovative and distinctive designs, with acute attention to fabric development and fit. Hallmarks of the Neil Barrett label are a balanced mix of traditional and cutting edge techniques, accurate detailing and a forward-thinking approach to the modern masculine wardrobe.

Q&A

If there was one piece of art you could feature in, which would it be and why?

Hercules excavated from a building constructed under the Emperor Nero in A.D 62. He represents my ideal vision of masculinity, cut from a single, rough block of marble.

Who inspires you and why? An artist, a family member, someone current or historical?

I like to be inspired by Art, the location in which the art is housed and how that art and location interact with one another. I look for intelligent ‘out of the box’ installations of similar subject matter, however not necessarily of a single artist or a single period.

What are your cultural aspirations? What do you still want to see, do and achieve?

To open studios in more cities around the world that would give me the opportunity to have real bases for my design teams and I to travel and to actually work efficiently whilst at the same time experience the daily life and culture of those cities.

What are your favourite cultural cities in the world and why?

London for its quantity and quality.

What are you up to at the moment and where can we find it?

I am currently working on the Pre AW16 collection and launching the production of SS16 Keffiah Camouflage Collection .What you can find in stores right now is the AW15 PreFall Liberty collection. www.neilbarrett.com.
