Annesta Le is a contemporary artist who has been living and working in Brooklyn since 2006.
She typically works on canvas with heavy acrylic and oil paints, and she also specialises in bending neon glass. Annesta’s aesthetic is characterised by her use of strong, bold, expressive yet unbridled marks in a highly contrasted colour palette.
Her art is dynamic in its creation - an open, experimental, unpredictable method balancing the intentional and unintentional. Subsequently, each piece becomes a life form unto itself, enabling the viewer to become entangled viscerally and emotionally. Her interplay of composition and illuminated mark making form dynamic installations that create exhilarating environments. The concluding oeuvre is intense, energetic, and interconnected, highlighting the spontaneity of Le’s practice.
If there was one piece of art you could feature in, which would it be and why?
I recently saw Georgia O’ Keeffe’s 'Red and Pink Rocks and Teeth' painting in Chicago at the Art Institute. I loved how soft and subtle yet strong the colors and the image as a whole was, I loved the feeling of that painting.
Who inspires you and why? An artist, a family member, someone current or historical?
For me it’s not a matter of who, but what inspires. The idea of two coming together to create something new such as a creative collaboration, alchemy or transmutation. Those ideas and processes excite and inspire me.
What are your cultural aspirations? What do you still want to see, do and achieve?
I aspire to always learn something new, experience something different and be challenged and stimulated. I always need more time to read, more time to create and more time in general.
What are your favourite cultural cities in the world and why?
New York of course, there’s nothing like it. It’s my home and I have gotten so much out of this beautiful but crazy city. However, I also love Paris for it’s vibe, Barcelona for it’s interesting cityscape and architecture and Berlin for it’s edge and openness.
What are you up to at the moment and where can we find it?
I am finalizing months of preparing for three different shows. I just wrapped up a show I was in in Chicago, I’m in a fun group show in Williamsburg for the summer, and I'm about to participate in my first museum show with 25 international artists in Italy that I'm super excited about!
